CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS EXHIBITION
Sealed Earth, Art Athina 2024
BOOTH C7
Dionisis Christofilogiannis and Natalia Manta
The exhibition we present is titled “Sheltered Dreams” and presents works by Dionysis Christofilogiannis and Natalia Manta, while we also participate in the performances with the work (a piece of…) “Bread” by Doris Hakim.
The exhibition “Sheltered Dreams” explores the human need to “belong” and our deep relationship with the cherished objects that accompany our existence, especially in moments of uncertainty and displacement. The creations of Dionisis Christofilogiannis, Natalia Manda, and the Performance of Doris Hakim connect and converse with each other, offering a unique visual approach to the concept of refuge, survival, and inner search.
Dionisis Christofilogiannis uses bread as a material to create tiles and a rudimentary tile roof, which indicates the fragile yet basic need for protection and security. Natalia Manta combines ceramic objects resembling musical instruments and censers, placed on white pillows on an old bed, recalling personal and collective memories of homes and rituals. Doris Hakim’s performance, in which she bakes bread in a makeshift oven, represents the women who, in extreme conditions of continuing persecution, bake bread in the streets of Gaza, symbolizing solidarity and care.
The materials used, bread and clay, speak to us of softness and solidity, of the delicate balance between the permanent and the transitory. Through Protected Dreams, the artists invite us to reflect on the concepts of intimacy and resilience, our relationship to home, our beloved objects, and the rituals that connect us to humanity and the divine, especially in times when everything around us seems uncertain.
