Maggy Ioannou is a Greek German ceramic artist, born on January 26, 1971, in Athens, Greece. After years of schooling on sketching and painting she studied Graphic Design at Vakalo Art & Design College in Athens Greece. She began her career in 1991 as a professional visualizer in advertising and freelance illustrator, and later on, as an Art Director, working in various advertising agencies in Greece. In 2016 she wrapped it all up to focus fully on her ceramic art. She studied ceramic sculpting, ceramic form and technology with renowned ceramic artist Marilena Michopoulou, and sculptor Altin Patselis, and she has attended numerous workshops, enriching her knowledge and techniques.
Being self-taught on porcelain and with no available local schooling in Greece, on porcelain studies, she reached out to Antoinette Badenhosrt, a renowned porcelain artist based in Mississippi, attending online courses, gaining knowledge and confidence, making it a turning point in her practice.
Working mainly with high-fired stoneware clay and porcelain, her art is symbolic, sometimes surreal, and even though it’s three-dimensional in present time she’s clearly influenced from her background as an illustrator, the pop surrealism of Mark Ryden and the ‘90s Lowbrow art movement.
