Espressobar is a collaborative project bringing together creatives from Greece and Iceland, first conceived at Ithakis28 studio in Kypseli and now reimagined for Art Athina 2025 at the Zappeion Megaron. This ephemeral gathering blends the artistic practices of Egill Sæbjörnsson, Theo Triantafyllidis, Polina Miliou, and, in this edition, the acclaimed Greek ceramic artist George Vavatsis.
A constellation of handmade ceramic objects, sculptures, and furniture that evoke the aesthetics and gestures of coffee culture. Through these elements, the project transforms the everyday ritual of the espresso bar into a space of encounter, play, and dialogue, where art and design are symbolically merged in collective rituals.
Espressobar operates as both a real and fictional microcosm, reflecting on how simple gestures, like gathering for coffee become rituals of true connection. By intertwining traditions of communal conversation with the playful, performative approaches, the project underscores the power of shared practices to bridge cultures and create new social imaginaries.
Meet the Artists
Egill Sæbjörnsson, known for his fusion of sculpture, performance, and digital animation, represented Iceland at the 2017 Venice Biennale, where he collaborated with fictional trolls. Theo Triantafyllidis navigates the intersections of gaming, virtual reality, and new media, expanding dialogues on digital embodiment and simulated worlds. Polina Miliou’s sculptural and installation-based practice, deeply rooted in material experimentation, has been featured at the Cycladic Museum and Carwan Gallery, crafting uncanny yet intimate spatial experiences through her tactile objects. George Vavatsis, combines functional design with sculptural expression, presenting his work internationally and most recently receiving the 1st Prize at the Biennale of Contemporary Keramics, Greece
